I teach in a Spanish university. One of my subjects is Fundamentals of Computer
Technology, it is a basic training six credits course taught in the first year
of the Grades on Computer Science,
Computer Engineering and Information
Systems. My students are between 20 and 25 years old and they are used to technological
applications.
The fundamental goal of the course is to understand
the basic level operation of a computer and the competences that the students
need acquire are: Explain the instruction execution cycle. Operate logically and arithmetically with binary numbers. Analyze
and design combinational logic networks. Analyze the behavior of synchronous
and asynchronous machines. Understand the concept of memory hierarchy and memory
operation. Define the performance of computers and explain what factors
contribute to it.
I try to develop a Personal learning
Environment (PLE) where students are provided with several interactive widgets,
videos and activities embedded in these videos, offering students the
opportunity to study wherever and whenever they want, at their own pace.
The widgets have been developed on Javascript. They
consist on interactive labs that challenge students' knowledge in a practical
way.
I also use videos that I flip using Ted-ED,
this way I can include questions to track the students participation and to
evaluate their results.
I am very interested in learning analytics so I
use all the data that I track from interactive widgets, and activities embedded
in videos to evaluate my students.
The goal is to know how learning takes place
in the classroom, but mainly outside. I want to analyze what happens in online
activities, especially in some non-formal activities.
I collect and evaluate the records of students’
interaction looking for correlations between activities and learning outcomes. I
measure the frequency with student access to online materials in order to
explore factors related to active participation; I compare the results of
assessments from activities conducted online and in-class.
Nowadays I’m investigating Google Apps
possibilities (google drive, gmail, google docs, google calendar…) and my
target is create useful and personalized web services and to integrate
everything as a personal system of learning.
My ideal learning Dashboard contains the applications
that I use currently and others that I would like to include, everything in the
same interface perfectly integrated, easy to use for students, that encourages them
to participate actively in the learning process, and at the same time easy to
manage and that gives useful information about how the learning process is
developed, providing the necessary support to show the level of student knowledge
and engagement and that allows assess students and take decisions to optimize
learning.
